Oyenike Oyekan foundation cancer awareness outreach goes to schools

The Oyenike Oyekan foundation cancer awareness outreach continued today with a cervical and breast cancer education programme at the Community High School, Alegongo, Akobo in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The programme had in attendance, staffs of Oyenike Oyekan foundation, female students in SSI-III classes, the school management team led by the principal, representatives of the Oyo State Ministry of health led by the head of non communicable disease desk Mrs Christiana Adedeji, and members of the media, among others.

The audience which comprised mainly of the female students of senior classes were taken through the lecture by Mrs Christiana Adedeji, on what is cancer, cervical and breast, as well as the risk factors and how to look out for symptoms in any part of the body which might necessitate the need for screening to determine what the lump or change is all about.

Mrs Christiana Adedeji spoke extensively on cervical cancer and how to look out for it's symptoms and how girls must take good care of their bodies which is very delicate and report any lump, abnormal, irregular discharge or changes noticed to their parents or guardian for necessary medical attention. She told the audience that early detection is key in the fight against cancer and that they should confide more in their mother's about the changes or lumps in their bodies, because of the mother and daughter bond.

She disabused the minds of the students by emphasizing that cervical and breast cancer is not caused by witches, wizards or ancestral causes, but that they are abnormal cells which grows in the body. She affirmed that the only way to know if one has cancer, is to go to the hospital for check up and treatment and not to spiritual homes.

Speaking in the same vein at the event, the managing consultant of Oyenike Oyekan foundation, Nelson Ekujumi told the students that the major focus of the foundation by coming to the school on it's cancer awareness outreach, was to catch them young and make them aware of the disease and what must be done to fight it generally, so that they can grow up with the knowledge which is needed to combat the ignorance and myths about cancer.

The students were then given the opportunity to ask questions on the topics of discussion in which the students displayed a high sense of understanding by the manner of questions posed to the educational team led by Mrs Christiana Adedeji, who responded appropriately. The Oyenike Oyekan foundation also gave out it's contact and social media handles for private interactions with the students if the need be.

The programme officer of Oyenike Oyekan foundation Miss Precious Tilewa in her vote of thanks, appreciated the board of Oyenike Oyekan foundation for their financial and moral support and to the Oyo State ministry of education and health and the management of the school for their collaboration and support.
