The Oyenike Oyekan foundation, a non governmental organization (NGO) with focus on cancer awareness, screening and social development, on Wednesday 28th of January 2026 took it's cancer awareness catch them young enlightenment campaign to Oba Akinbiyi model college, Mokola Ibadan, in Oyo State.

The team was well received at the school premises by the management team led by the principal Mrs Mary Adebisi Adebanji and other members of staff and the students. She thanked the foundation for its selfless humanitarian programmes of educating and enlightening the society, most especially the young ones by equipping them with the right information in the fight against cancer.

In her presentation at the event, the Oyenike Oyekan foundation programme coordinator Precious Fasiku, educated the students on what is cancer, with particular emphasis on breast cancer, the risk factors, symptoms and what should be done, when any of the symptoms are observed? She told the students that accessing the nearest medical institution for screening is key, and in her words, "early detection is key in the fight against cancer".






According to her, cancer is not contracted by family curse or by being bewitched, but rather that, it's a disease that afflicts both male and females through it's various types. "Breast cancer is a disease to which every female is vulnerable, just like their male counterparts but whose ratio is negligibly low unlike the females".

Miss Fasiku then identified those symptoms to look out for around the breast area and emphasized the need for the students to speak up and inform their parents, guardian or counsellor of any changes or bump on any part of the body. "When you notice any change(a) or feel a bump on or around the breast, quickly inform your parents or guardian and go for check up at the hospital". 

She went further to teach the students most especially the girls, with demonstration on how to conduct self breast examination.

In his contribution, the managing consultant of Oyenike Oyekan foundation Nelson Ekujumi made it known that the essence of the "Catch them young cancer awareness campaign is to avail the young ones with factual and knowledgeable information about a disease that they may likely come in contact with as they grow up". According to him, "cancer is not a death sentence, but can be treated and cured, only if it is detected early".

He told the students that cancer is a disease that affects mankind globally, and that why the students are the main focus in the foundation outreach, is because of the recognition of the youths as change agents and the need to debunk old held myths and superstitious beliefs about what causes cancer. He said that cancer as a disease is a product of hereditary factors and well as our lifestyle, but which can be overcome only with the right information.

Nelson Ekujumi admonished the students just like other speakers, to stay away from alcohol and drugs because of their debilitating effects on health. He advocated that the students should take the message at the outreach home, to educate and inform their parents, guardians, relations and peers, and in that way, "We will all be contributing to disseminating the right information which is critical in the fight against cancer". He educated the students on the need to cut down on the consumption of red meat, maintain a healthy lifestyle through regular exercises, intake of vegetables and fruits, etc.

He made the students to realize that as leaders of today, that they are critical stakeholders who must be equipped with the needed resources to enable them make changes. He challenged them to "Spread the message of what you have learnt here today beyond this place, to your homes and community in order to save lives".
